Bolla Szilvia művészete a képtúltermelés és -fogyasztás depresszivitását tematizáló absztrakt anti-fotográfiáktól indult, hogy végül eljusson a depressziót magát tematizáló poszt-fotográfiáig. Ahogy a depresszió egyszerre individuális és szociális, biológiai és politikai, úgy Running Up that Hill című kiállítása is személyes és transzgenerációs szinten keresztül közelíti meg a depresszív gazdasági-ideológiai rendszerünkben egyre inkább rendszerszintűvé váló depresszió esztétikai és társadalmi dimenzióit. A konkrét és szimbolikus emléktereket rekonstruáló vizuális-szónikus installációk, a bio- és pszichopolitika által deformált testeket leképező ‘farmako-kinetikus’ szobrok, a bőr és a fotográfia analógiáján alapuló ‘neurogramok’ az erőtlenséget ellenerővé formáló depresztétikai és gyászpolitikai programmá állnak össze. Bolla a „látható és a láthatatlan, az anyagszerű és az anyagtalan, illetve az élő és a halott dichotómiáját” kikezdő, korábban alapvetően fotó-ontológiai és fotó-kritikai kontextusba ágyazott anyagkísérletei és formaproblémái a kiállításban probléma-formákká válnak, összeköttetéseket képezve Kate Bushtól Walter Benjaminig, a gyógyszeripar-kritikától a kapitalista realizmusig, a pszichofarmakológiától a szecesszióig és a black metaltól a materiális feminizmusig.
Bolla Szilvia (1992) Hága és Budapest között élő képzőművész. A londoni Camberwell College of Arts alapképzése után a budapesti Moholy-Nagy Művészeti Egyetem fotográfia szakán szerzett mesterfokozatot, illetve térinstallációs képzésben részesült a berlini Universität der Künste-n. Az Alagya művészduó egyik fele. Az elmúlt években munkáit bemutatták többek között a varsói Stefan Gierowski Foundationben, a budapesti Trafó Galériában, az Art Quarter Project Space-ben, az amszterdami Semester 9-ban, az Unseen Photography Fesztiválon, valamint a londoni Victoria & Albert Múzeumban. 2019-ben a párizsi Cité Internationale des Arts, 2022-ben a New York-i International Studio & Curatorial Program, 2023-ban a stuttgarti Akademie Schloss Solitude rezidenciaprogramjaiban vett részt.

The art of Szilvia Bolla, which has started with abstract anti-photographs reacting against the depressive overconsumption of pictures, now arrived at a post-photographic praxis that tackles the subject of depression itself. As depression is both individual and social, biological and political, the exhibition Running Up that Hill confronts the aesthetic and political dimensions of personal, transgenerational as well as systemic depression of a depressive economical-ideological system. The audio-visual installations, reconstructing autobiographical and symbolic mnemotopes, the pharmaco-kinetic sculptures of bodies deformed by the biopower, in addition to the neurograms based on the analogy between the photograph and the skin, are assembled as points in a depresthetic and psychopolitical manifesto. Formal problems and problem-forms of Bolla, dismantling the “dichotomies of the visible and the invisible, the material and immaterial, the dead and the alive”, previously discussed in a photo-ontological and photo-critical context, here are reprogrammed to create a network of connections from Kate Bush to Walter Benjamin, from spectropolitics to Secession, or from black metal to material feminism.
Bolla Szilvia (1992) is a visual artist living between Budapest and The Hague. After graduating from Fine Art Photography course at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, she completed the MA Photography course of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest in addition to studying Spatial Design at the Universitat der Kunste Berlin. In recent years, Szilvia Bolla’s work has been presented at the Stefan Gierowski Foundation, Warsaw; the Art Quarter Project Space and the Trafó Gallery, Budapest; Semester 9 and the Unseen Photography Festival, Amsterdam, as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. She has been an artist in residence at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2019), the International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York (2022), and the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (2023).
